How to Choose the Decor Style

As soon as we rent/buy our house or apartment, we already imagine how we are going to decorate every corner, so that it is harmonious, cozy, and just like us!

Not least because it needs to be a place where you have to be in a hurry to get back. A place that offers comfort, tranquility, and security after a busy day at work.

But before we go out and buy a sofa, a rug, a curtain, or any other decoration item, it is important to analyze it and have a goal.

In other words, choose your decoration style!

And what is a style? A style is created according to the changes that occur in society.

For example, the classical style is something that came from the old days. Society lived in a way where objects meant possession, and the presence of gold was synonymous with wealth.

Nowadays, styles that seek practicality, such as minimalism, are more in fashion, meaning that less is more!

Therefore, it is interesting that you define which decoration style you like the most, avoiding that you buy a piece of furniture and a piece of each style, leaving your house a real carnival.

Not that this is bad. But care must be taken so that there is harmony in the decoration and you can feel good in the environment!

One thing is a fact: everyone who is building or remodeling has a pinboard on Pinterest or on his or her cell phone, owns books, magazines, or any other medium that talks about the subject. Isn’t that true?

And this is fundamental so that you can gather references to know your style, collecting prints, furniture, colors, textures, fabric samples, coatings, and much more.

With this, you can try to get to know all the styles of decoration that exist, and associate them with your personal tastes.

But before defining which one will be chosen to decorate your home, it is important to take into account some considerations such as:

  • Suitability for the climate:

Your decor needs to adapt and fit in with the climate you live in!

For example, a skin spread out on top of the sofa does not go very well if you live in a region where it is hot practically all year round.

Or, use classic style furniture that holds velvet and gold in a beach region that has humidity and materials oxidize easily. It won’t work very well, right?

  • Accessories:

Let’s suppose you have looked in a magazine and decided that your preferred style is minimalist. Your dream is to have that clean, easy-to-clean room.

But, you love accessories, such as carpets, curtains, and decorative objects, for example.

So, it could be that your style is not quite the minimalist, but some other style, do you agree?

So try to analyze well and see if the style is really in line with your taste!

  • Visual appeal:

This means that the decoration needs to agree with those who frequent the environment!

One more example: it would make no sense for a technology company to use a rustic decoration, all worked in dark tones, wood, chandelier with rustic wheel, leather rug, etc.

The ideal would be a more high-tech style, wouldn’t it?

So the style you choose needs to reflect who you are and the image you want to convey!

But don’t worry, that’s exactly what we are here for!

Let us help you define your decorating style, in case you don’t have a favorite yet, or are in doubt!

Come with us as we quote one by one from the main ones, and you are sure to find one that will touch your heart!

Decorating Styles

Decorating style is the same as our dressing style, everyone has their own personal taste, you just may not have discovered it yet!

But it doesn’t mean that you have to follow to the letter all the rules of the style you identify with. It may be that some small details will not appeal to you as much.

The important thing is that you have it as a reference, and harmonize it to make the whole decoration your way, in a way that brings you good feelings.

Yes you can, mix the references you have, and create something that is comfortable for you!

Don’t try to follow a fashion, just something that is trending. The style you choose for decoration needs to match and be consistent with your personality.

Not always your taste is 100% such style, because besides the decoration, the style needs to be functional so that the house can be enjoyed, being comfortable!

Industrial Style

The industrial style is one of the most popular of the moment, marked by its unfinished appearance reminiscent of old factories!

This decorating style gained momentum in New York between the 1950s and 1970s, when abandoned industrial warehouses began to be used as residences, what we call today a loft!Industrial loft. By Casa Mirador

It was from these industrial spaces that the rough construction characteristics of this style emerged, with few coverings, with exposed electrical and plumbing installations, and with concrete, wood, or burnt cement floors.

Its structure is exposed, the rooms are integrated and without many walls to isolate the rooms!Industrial style environment. By Hao Desingn – Casoca

Sober, neutral colors such as black white and gray mark this style, and vibrant colors integrate the decor in a well-balanced and isolated way.

Generally, the most used are blue, yellow, and red.Industrial style bedroom with yellow. By Blink Reformei

The doors and windows are large and wide, made of materials such as iron, wood, and glass, enhancing the natural light and illumination of the space.Large, wide window in industrial room. By Leroy Merlin

One of the most important points of industrial decoration is to use pure, unpainted, raw materials.

The objects look rustic, recycled, metal, rusted iron, cement, bricks, everything that reminds one of an old factory!

Therefore, when choosing furniture, prefer steel, solid wood, or iron. And the electronics and appliances, preferably made of stainless steel.Kitchen with industrial decoration. By Bartz Moveis

You can feel the industrial style, can’t you? If you want to blend in with this style, the rustic and the modern can combine very well!

So if you like more urban environments, the industrial style is the one for you!

Vintage style

The vintage style is a romantic and nostalgic decoration that makes reference to everything that was in the past, more precisely between the 1920s and the 1980s.

Who hasn’t had or has some piece of furniture or object that belonged to their grandfather or great-grandfather? It has been passed down from generation to generation and can now become part of your home decor!Vintage Decoration. By Archtrends

In vintage decoration, both the furniture and the furniture pieces originate from the period.

If you have not inherited any sofas, armchairs, china cabinets, lamps, and so on, you can find them in antique stores.

Typewriters, wall clocks, household appliances such as mixers and blenders, vinyl records, telephone, radio, and TV sets are other examples of decoration.Vintage office. By Marelli

Scandinavian style

Scandinavian decoration doesn’t have much of a secret, since white is the main character of this style!

It emerged in the 20th century in the Nordic countries of Europe, where winter is harsh and lasts for many months.

Cozy, pleasant, and elegant, this style carries with it a minimalist concept. It is characterized by straight lines, white walls and furniture with neutral colors, and natural light!Scandinavian decoration. By Leroy Merlin

The composition of the environment is made by classic elements such as wood, which can be present in sofas, beds, armchairs, and cabinets, for example.

In addition to the raw tones of wood, natural fibers, leather, and wool also work very well!Scandinavian style living room. By Fixa

The cozy aesthetic is reflected in the use of bedspreads, blankets, and rugs with natural, voluminous fabrics.

The colors, on the other hand, are left to the decorative elements. But always neutral and classic tones, such as gray, nude, and pastels!

In addition, most environments with Scandinavian-style decoration rely on green touches of plants for interior decoration.Scandinavian-style living room with plants, rugs and blankets. By Home and Architecture

Rustic and colonial style

The rustic and colonial style represents very well the country air, where the items that compose the environment are simpler and more natural!

This style is based on the decoration used in the old colonies in European countries, which began when immigrants wanted to bring a little sophistication and comfort to their colonial homes.

Thus, the rustic footprint made the whole environment as cozy as possible!Rustic and colonial decoration. By Rac Arquitetura

As for the colors, it is traditional to introduce earthy, brown, and reddish tones, based on neutral colors such as white, gray, and beige.

And to bring even more naturalness, of course wood is the protagonist of this style!

Wood can be used both in the furniture and on the floor. In the latter case, it is interesting to leave the walls smooth with a more neutral paint, and the furniture in earthy tones.

And for those who want a more prominent wall, they can cover it with bricks or stones that match light-colored floors.Rustic living room. By Viva Decora Magazine

Is there a cozier style than this to accompany the winter nights?

Minimalist style

The minimalist style eschews excess and creates a clean, modern, and functional environment!

It emerged in the early 20th century and its influence came from Japanese culture. The environments are designed with straight lines and simple geometric shapes.Minimalist room. By Brazil Storage

As the name implies, the intention is to use as few objects as possible in the same environment, and they must be discreet and functional.

Minimalist decorating has become a lifestyle that carries this idea of getting rid of what is not necessary.

In addition to walls in light colors such as white and pastel shades, metallic or woody pieces can be used as a form of accent.

And to avoid leaving the environment with a hospital look, the use of few objects is welcome, such as black and white pictures and neutral colors.Minimalist-style bedroom. By Sandra Picciotto – Viva Decora

Mirrors fit very well in this style of decoration, because they give a feeling of spaciousness in the space.

The large glass windows also give the room a clean look and natural lighting, in addition to the light fixtures and lampshades that are great to use for various light points in indoor residential lighting.

I bet if your ideology of life is based on “less is more” the minimalist style is just right for you!

Classic Style

The classical decoration has its origins in the Greek and Roman architecture, which has in its details, refinement and elegance!

This style usually calls for larger and taller rooms, precisely because the furniture is large and the decorative pieces are very ornate.

It may even fit and adapt in small apartments, but it may give the impression that the room is even smaller!Living room classic style. By Westwing

This style carries with it a trend that is very reminiscent of castle settings, where plaster moldings, baseboards, fine fabrics, wallpapers, and curtains are pure refinement.

The decorative pieces are marked by porcelain materials, worked crystals, silverware, picture frames, large mirrors, floral arrangements, and various others.Classic-style living room. By Westwing

The most commonly used material for countertops in the kitchen and bathroom is marble. On the floor, solid wood, and on the ceiling, relief drawings in plaster are the greatest charm, and can be in shades of gold and bronze.

In the bedrooms, the style is well represented by wooden beds with columns, elegant armchairs and chairs, and crystal chandeliers with many details.Classic style bedroom. By Marcia Chain Marchi – Decor Tips

Provençal style

Provençal decoration has its origin in the Provence region, which is in the south of France.

According to what the story tells, the peasants who lived in this region tried to copy the richness of the luxurious furniture and decoration of the French nobility, however, as it was not possible, they adapted it giving origin to Provençal.

The craftsmen were inspired by the cabinetmakers of royalty, but since they did not have the same resources, they created the furniture without all the gold details.

Thus, the Provençal furniture presented simpler details and with an emphasis on wood!Provençal style armchair. By Westwing

Provençal decoration harks back to the rural lifestyle of the French, who lived in rustic stone houses among the lavender fields.

Wood is one of its main characteristics, even better if it is demolition or has a more rustic finish!Provençal kitchen. By Viva Decora

Besides wood, and even wrought iron, pastel shades are another characteristic of this style of decoration. Mainly shades like lavender, green, pink, and light blue.

Floral prints were also present, especially on tableware and fabrics covering furniture, curtains, and wallpaper.Provençal style bedroom. By Viva Decora

This style reminded me of grandma’s house, right? Full of florals and wood, just the way to be cozy!

Retro Style

The retro decoration style is very similar to vintage, where the environment is all inspired by old furniture and objects!

But they have a difference: in vintage style the pieces are really old and passed on from generation to generation.

The retro style, on the other hand, is a re-reading. That is, the furniture is new, but with the design and characteristics of yesteryear!Retro-style living room. By Casa Abril

In this style, intense colors are used, whether pastel or vibrant. They are present on the walls, in the furniture, in the decoration items, or in the appliances.

And as an example, nothing better than the refrigerator! The retro model with colors that break away from the traditional characterize the kitchen with style of the 50s and 60s.Retro Kitchen. For Tudo ela

Retro decoration has yet another great characteristic: the furniture with toothpick feet. It is common to see them in beds, tables, bookcases, armchairs, and sofas.

And speaking of sofas and armchairs, striped upholstery, colorful blankets and pillows are a must!Retro Living Room. By Viva Decora

The retro style allows you to mix pieces of furniture with antique design in a totally contemporary environment!

So, does this feeling of nostalgia touch your heart?

Modern Style

The modern style is versatile, adapting to any environment and appealing to almost all tastes!

It is characterized by simplicity and practicality. It can be confused with the minimalist style, but the difference is that the modern style includes more colors and decorative elements.Environment with modern decoration. By Madeirol

The decor features an emphasis on straight lines, with low, horizontal furnishings.

So, if your idea is to have something functional and not overdone, but not as simple as the minimalist, the modern style is ideal for you!

Rococo style

The Rococo style, or Rocaille in French, was born in the 1700s and is characterized by soft colors and lots of gold.

Its aspects were inherited from the baroque, however, rococo is more loaded in details, having elegance and exuberance!

It is important to remember that the rococo style is a style of the aristocracy, which was keen to demonstrate its wealth through decoration.

So the gold finish is quite present in picture frames, bed headboards, handles, armchair feet, chandeliers, doorknobs, etc.Bedroom with rococo style decoration. By Modenese Interiors

It is a style that seems to be similar to classic, but here, the colors are more neutral and the details more exaggerated!

Ethnic Style

The ethnic style of decoration is characterized by the richness and mixture of influences and cultures, which is reflected mainly in the prints!

They can be animal, tribal, with Indian, African, Japanese, Chinese references, and so on.Ethnic style bedroom. By Iaza Móveis

The furniture is mostly handmade and conveys lightness and freshness.

So much so that wood is the most suitable material for the decorative objects, because it is neutral and matches the plants, rugs, cushions, and other elements that are part of ethnic decoration.Ethnic style room. By Westwing

Invest in natural objects, such as plants, bamboo pieces, wooden items, clay, stone, natural fiber fabrics, and others.

In addition to items to complement, such as paintings, sculptures, cushion covers, curtains, tribal objects, musical instruments, baskets, and other accessories that add to the decoration!Environment with ethnic style. By Westwing

Ethnic decoration has everything to be beautiful, but it is necessary to be careful with excesses so that the environment does not become too heavy, you know?

Contemporary Style

For those of us who do not have a thorough knowledge of decorating styles, it is very easy to get confused between contemporary and modern.

But, basically, as we have seen, the modern style has more traces of a minimalist aesthetic, while the contemporary style, which has its basis in the modern style, allows you to bring more color, accessories, and personal touches into the decor.Contemporary Decoration. By Espaço e Forma.

Neutral colors form a base, being on floors, walls, and in the main furniture.

In some spots and details, stronger colors and textures are used to create different visual effects.

Here, the use of materials such as glass, lacquered wood, and polished stone create surfaces that add sparkle to the decor!

The use of geometric shapes is also frequent, and they are well marked by straight lines, from the furniture to the windows, doors, and columns.Contemporary room. By Madeirol

High tech style

Finally, the high tech style is associated with intelligent structures, optimization of resources and materials, reuse, efficiency, functionality, and sophistication.

Technology is present in all stages of the project, starting with the lighting that is inserted in various parts of the space, including the furniture!Environment with high tech decoration. By Casa com Moda
